You’re taking a step to improve your success online and I couldn’t be more excited for what these simple steps can do for your business presence online.
Each step in this 5 day challenge is a process that when used consistently will solidify your presence and engagement online.
Day 1 Assignment:
Alright, so before we get into doing any specific writing, we need to do two things.
Step 1) We need to set accountability (so you get to measure and celebrate your results!)
Step 2) We’ve got to clarify your end result so we know exactly where we’re going.
Step #1 is CRITICAL.
Let me explain WHY.
When I was struggling to write my first book, I hemmed and hawed for 9 months.
I remember going to grab tea with one of my mentors, Sweetie Berry. She is a strategist for creatives who focuses on developing clients’ presence, process and products online.
We sat down at our favorite breakfast spot, in view of all the promising development happening in my town. I could see the old Steel Mill now converted into a cool entertainment complex and creative space.
Sweetie put her cup down and said, “So, are you ready to see yourself?”
“I checked the mirror this morning, I thought everything was fine,” I said.
She looked at me with a very sweet Mary Poppins style look and winked her eye saying, “You haven’t seen the you the world is currently seeing”.
My mind almost exploded. I took a moment to let the magnitude of what she said sink in.
When Sweetie challenged me to take a look in the social media mirror, my heart started pounding. Let me be clear, the thought of seeing me through the lens of others, it made me a wee bit uncomfortable. I could feel that tension in my stomach. But I said, “OK.” In less than 5 minutes, she helped me see how my image online was very different than what I thought it was professionally. Things I didn’t think were a big deal, when looked at by an outsider, were what they found!
I took out my journal, (As you should do right now) and I wrote down my commitment to take 10 days to really deep dive into my social media and see how I was coming across.
And that’s the point of this FIRST STEP.
If this 5 day course is going to work for you, then you’ve got to make a commitment now to work the course.
So, here’s what I want you to do.
Write down five days from today’s date down. We each work more consistently if we know the reward and/or the consequence if we do not complete an intention. Take a moment and define what that reward and that consequence will be if you do or do not do this five days. Accountability to yourself is the most important accountability to have.
For me it was “When I align and solidify my presence online to match my professional offerings, I will celebrate by having a friend meet me for an afternoon tea at the Hotel B and if I fail to complete all 10 processes, I’ll do the yard for my husband so he can go to the game Saturday.”
Right away, I had motivation for I love tea with a friend and I so do not prefer yard work.
Your celebration could be something as simple as picking up a coffee on your way home, the consequence could be something crazy or arduous like cutting the grass or scrubbing the kitchen floor. Whatever it is, write it down in your journal next to your goal.
I want to cheer you on when you complete the course, so hit Reply to this email TODAY and tell me the date and the reward or the consequence so you have accountability.
Without intentionality and a measurable outcome, I promise you your chances of actually getting your goal completed will drop dramatically.
Okay, on to Part 2 of today’s lesson.
Now that we’ve got accountability in place, let’s move on to your outline of social media platforms.
Where are you online? Take the time to quickly look at all of your social media outlets. Write them down. Even if it’s a work account or something you do with a group. Anywhere you appear online. Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Basecamp, SnapChat, TicTok and everything else that you’re connected to.
Make a vertical list of them in your notes, the addresses and the emails they are attached to.
That’s it for today. To recap. Write down your goal date to complete the process. Write down your consequence if you don’t complete it. Then write down all social media outlets you are connected to.
Then relax and have a great day. I will see you tomorrow.
All the best,
